UPDATE RE MP’S RESPONSE TO POLICE PAY CAMPAIGN
To keep you updated on the political front as you are aware we wrote to all the MP’s with constituencies in Greater Manchester and lobbied at Parliament on 12th December 2007. It is obvious that the ones we spoke to are acutely aware of the strength of feeling within their constituencies and react to individual letters they receive from constituents.
There are a number of Early Day Motions (EDM’s) relating to police pay (494, 512, 527, 538 and 539). Of these 512 is that with the greatest number of signatories.
EDM’s are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons. However, very few EDM’s are actually debated. Instead, they are used for reasons such as publicising the views of individual MPs, drawing attention to specific events or campaigns, and demonstrating the extent of parliamentary support for a particular cause or point of view. That support is shown by the fact that EDM 512 has one of the highest numbers of signatories of those listed. This helps us to place pressure on the government.
You can view an up to date website that shows you which EDM’s your MP has signed at http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/Default.aspx. It is convention that Ministers would not normally sign EDM’s.
However if your MP has not signed one of the EDM’s relating to police pay, preferably 512 then please write or email them asking why. Your MP’s contact details can be found at http://www.theyworkforyou.com/.
We will be writing to all MP’s again and lobbying them the day before our mass rally in London.
It is a political impetus we must keep going.
